The working definition used today for a concussion is “a complex pathophysiological process affecting the brain, induced by traumatic biomechanical forces” (developed by the consensus panel at the 1st International Conference on Concussion in Sport that was held in Vienna, Austria in 2001).
Simply Put: If you bang your head or if your head is forced to move too quickly "whiplash" - You may have a concussion! Pay attention to your symptoms!
Although concussions are a risk in sport, the health benefits far outweigh these risks. That said, you should take all precautionary steps in protecting yourself and your brain.
Here at Forward Physiotherapy we believe strongly in concussion base line testing. This allows our highly qualified team of health care professionals to measure how your brain functions normally. Given the base line test we can then measure how well your brain functions post injury and determine whether or not you may have a concussion and when you are appropriate to return to your activity or sport. When these details are clear, we can work more effectively with the patient in planning a rehabilitation program.
Currently most minor hockey associations are making the The ImPACT Neurocognitive Baseline Test mandatory – including the North Halton Girls Hockey Association (click here for policy).
Our Head Physiotherapist on staff played 5 years of competitive CIS Women’s Hockey, attending multiple National Championships and knows first hand the risks, preventative measures, and recovery steps when faced with the threat or reality of a concussion.
